Rather than starting by writing lyrics, try exploring different themes and topics through reading, writing, visual art, or anything else that inspires you. Keep a notebook with you at all times. The more you explore art, the more frequently ideas will come to you, and if you don’t write them down, you’ll likely forget. That way, when you start writing lyrics, you can first look at your list of ideas to see if there’s something interesting to start with.
Song Facts is an excellent blog to get inspiration from — its focus is around interviews of writers that many of us pros look up to, talking about songs they’ve written, and often through a historical lens.
My playlists generally had a progression in them. It wasn’t just a random set of songs thrown together, but rather, a journey with songs that connected somehow. I knew that aspect was key for our tool, which ultimately meant we needed to codify the DJ part of my brain. Let’s pretend that we have a guitar string tuned to play a note called middle C, which has a frequency of 1 Hz. (In real life, middle C has a frequency of 261.626 Hz, so if you want to think in terms of actual frequencies, just multiply all the numbers in the following paragraphs by 261.626.)
So much of today’s new technologies tend to offer (at least in marketing speak) out-of-the-box solutions to musicians’ and students’ problems. Softwares and plugins, devices and networks, are all designed to minimize the rough edges around taking the time to learn things the hard way, practice them, and interact with things and people. And while these tools are optional, and do provide new avenues for creative expression and learning, they sometimes also skip over some crucial steps in the lifelong learning process of the artist, particularly those steps that historically have happened in the classroom.
Paul Weinstein, aka Chipocrite, is a chiptune musician who uses original Nintendo Game Boys, often accompanied by guitar, bass, drums, and other instruments, to create complex audio masterpieces. He has performed at numerous festivals and conventions, including the Vans Warped Tour, Blip Festival, MAGFest, and AnimeNEXT; provided soundtracks for commercials as well as video games and online videos; and released three EPs in addition to his full-length album, Wordplay, in December 2014. He is currently working on the soundtrack for “EarthNight,” a rogue-like runner game coming soon to several devices. Paul is the instructor for Soundfly’s free Chiptune Crash Course series.

Tapes, like vinyl, are analog, which means while you might not get that crackling sound you love so much about old vintage vinyls, you will get a uniquely analog sound that strikes up the warm and fuzzies. Plus, it actually will sound better than what you get from the compressed quality of streaming, so if you or your fans are audio heads in any way (or if you just value sound quality) this makes it a really good option.
As the Enlightenment gathered steam toward the end of Bach’s life, such views seemed to many of his colleagues to be outmoded or even a threat, as the product of the very same ancient, superstitious religion that the Enlightenment sought to escape. (There is an amazing book about Bach’s encounter with Enlightenment attitudes if you wish to learn more about this.)
